Quote of the Week...

“The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity. The fears are paper tigers. You can do anything you decide to do. You can act to change and control your life; and the procedure , the process is its own reward.”

One week and counting

Well it's one week until my race. I've done all I can at this point. Now I just have to get the head right. The taper is the worst part of training and racing. It's when doubts pop up and you become restless. I just have to run a smart race and believe that it is going to happen. If I accomplish the feat it will be a 10 minute PR!!! Time to run great in California.

First attempt 1 month and counting

Less than one month until I attempt 2:18:59. This week started out with high confidence, but has faded to doubts. Sunday I ran a 27 mile loop with two long and steep up hills. Ran it in 3:03 and felt like I could take on the world. Monday was rest. Yesterday I ran an 8 mile tempo in under 47 min. I felt OK. Today ran 1 1/2 hours and felt like crap. Wanted to stop and walk, but was able to finish it, nothing fast though.

Long runs are done and one real work out left in the training… Continue

maybe can help

First of all I am an old old guy and my times are from the 70's---so I will NOT be trying to qualify for the 2012 trials, but I have been involved in the sport for 40 years and have a passion for the trials, etc. I was one of the invited runner coordinators for the past ten years for the Vermont City Marathon and have lots of contacts in the industry.

I am currently the Assistant Athletic Director and head Cross Country and Track Coach at the University of South Carolina Beaufort-- a… Continue

Iron

I agree with Camille 100%. I think many runners have not kept an eye on their iron levels and in turn have run less than their capability. I often wonder how fast I might have run in high school or college had I known about this when I was a little younger. I can remember at Malone College coach Jack Hazen and I having in-depth discussions of why I was not an NAIA All-American yet. I was pushing out top Kenyans in training yet when it came to races and also in some of the workouts I just did… Continue
