this mornings' long run gave me a taste for what the future holds. alarm went off at six and it was still dark. overcast, rain coming down, and cold, the likes of which i haven't seen for several months. decided to put on my arm warmers and gloves which later proved to be a good idea. i suffer from some sort of low circulation in the arms and fingers that is accentuated while running. usually in the winter months i have to wear two gloves (sometimes three) per hand with my fingers still getting…

i just finished my second quality workout this morning. i learnt a few things from last week that i applied to this week as it is the exact workout. i brought a water bottle and took a few sips after the warm up, after the six strides, and after the tempo run. also i decided to keep track of each lap in terms of seconds over or under that way, i could stay right on pace without any surprises.
i started the morning in a bit of despair. even before i started running i felt tired, unmotivated, and…

I agree with Camille 100%. I think many runners have not kept an eye on their iron levels and in turn have run less than their capability. I often wonder how fast I might have run in high school or college had I known about this when I was a little younger. I can remember at Malone College coach Jack Hazen and I having in-depth discussions of why I was not an NAIA All-American yet. I was pushing out top Kenyans in training yet when it came to races and also in some of the workouts I just did not…

I was reading Nate Pennington's blog, in which he mentioned getting his ferritin tested and finding out it was low. Ferritin = stored iron.... your body uses it, as needed, to make red blood cells to carry oxygen. I honestly believe having low, or even "normal", ferritin is limiting A LOT of runners/marathoners from reaching their full potential. It can't be emphasized enough how it important it is for serious runners to get enough iron, whether through diet (RED meat, green veggies, black beans…

First of all I am an old old guy and my times are from the 70's---so I will NOT be trying to qualify for the 2012 trials, but I have been involved in the sport for 40 years and have a passion for the trials, etc. I was one of the invited runner coordinators for the past ten years for the Vermont City Marathon and have lots of contacts in the industry.
I am currently the Assistant Athletic Director and head Cross Country and Track Coach at the University of South Carolina Beaufort-- a new progra…

I think creating a site like this is crucial to american distance running. I ran track and field in high school with PRs of 1:59 for 800m, 4:24 for 1600m and 9:46 for 3200m...running the marathon back than was something I NEVER dreamt of doing. I ran for malone college from 1995-2000 and didnt produce the greatest of times but have always believed running performance doesnt come overnight. I ran 15:19 for 5K, 24:32 for 8K and 8:41 for the indoor 3K, 4:18 for the mile in college..long distance ru…

Research can show us the most popular courses, but are they the BEST courses to try to qualify on? Put up a comment to vote for your ideal course. Make sure to tell us why you think it's a great qualifying course.

Welcome to the site.
My current thought is to create a list of races that are eligible for qualifying, and ideal in terms of weather, support, etc. From that list, groups could be created around a particular race, and communication/coordination among members could happen within that group. All members would also have access to the more general parts of the site including training resources, hopefully coaching resources, etc.
For each ideal race, I'd like to create a page on the site that break…

I did some research on the races that produced the most qualifiers over the past two Olympic cycles, and produced the following reports. The numbers show pretty clearly where people have had the most success qualifying.
It's worth noting that the races with the highest number of qualifiers haven't been the 'fastest' courses, but the courses with the best group pacing--as many runners as possible going after the standard in the same race. But just because many people can qualify on a slower cour…

I found this link this morning. It's a great article which informs a lot of the areas I would like this site to assist potential qualifiers in. Enjoy!
